Historical Mendocino
A cherished historical destination, Mendocino has seen significant changes over the years. Despite its unique character, large corporate entities, including real estate services, have established a presence in the area. Unfortunately, only a few locally owned and operated agencies remain.
In small towns across the nation, large chains move into an area, causing once-thriving main streets to struggle due to being out-priced by these external competitors. Although it’s unlikely that a big-box store will open in Mendocino, this underlying dynamic is present here as well.
One particular corporate franchise claims to be locally owned and operated in the Mendocino area, a statement that seems misleading. This fairly recent addition to the Coast is not fooling anyone and lacks authenticity.
What Does Being a Franchise Actually Mean?
Being a franchise involves several key elements:
- Bound to branding requirements
- Compliance with corporate regulations, limiting creativity
- Payment of franchise fees
- Profits leaving the local area, Community doesn’t reap benefits
In contrast, local businesses are typically independently owned and operated by individuals or families who are deeply rooted in their communities.
Why It Matters
Supporting local businesses is crucial for the sustainability and vitality of our communities. Every dollar spent at a locally owned business stays within the community, circulating and bolstering the local economy. This, in turn, creates jobs and opportunities, and supports the area’s infrastructure.
Research shows that local businesses are more likely to source their products and services from other local suppliers, creating a multiplier effect that strengthens the economic health of the community. For instance, according to SustainableConnections.org, for every $100 spent at a local business, $68 remains in the community, compared to only $43 for non-local businesses. They further add that small-scale, locally owned businesses create communities that are more prosperous, connected, and generally better-off across a wide range of metrics.
Giving Back
The Mendocino Coast’s charm lies in its grassroots, back-to-the-land individualism that has shaped the area. Small, vibrant businesses are the backbone of our economy.
By seeking local expertise and supporting community businesses, we contribute to a more sustainable and prosperous future. Supporting local businesses not only nurtures our community but also ensures a better tomorrow for everyone involved.
Local business is the bread and butter of our Community. Stay local, support your community, and invest in local businesses to foster a thriving, sustainable environment.
